Purbeck Rockery stone used to restore Hogsmill River habitat and fish passage.

South East Rivers Trust (SERT) is an environmental charity dedicated to conserving and restoring rivers and catchments. They work on river clean-ups, river restoration and river monitoring. Lovell Stone Group have recently supplied Purbeck Rockery Stone to one of their recent restoration projects at Hogsmill River, which is now complete.

Hogsmill River is a well-loved chalk stream which flows from Ewell to Kingston, where it joins the River Thames. Chalk streams, as a result of a unique combination of geology and climate, support special wildlife habitats and species; brown trout, water vole, kingfisher and European eel. They are fed from groundwater aquifiers, which means that the water is clean and clear.  There are ony about 200 in chalk streams in the world and most are found in the UK.

Our Purbeck Rockery Stone was used to create a rock ramp at as part of an on-going habitat restoration project. The in-channel weir structures also help to improve fish passage and migration, which can be affected by human and natural obstructions. We supplied over 100 tonnes of rockery and some rip rap (small rockery stone) and snaps. Everyone is really pleased with the end result and for us it's really great to see our stone being used in a conservation project.
