Buckfast Abbey is an active Benedictine monastery built between 1007 and 1038 and up until 2012, the floor had been concrete screed.
The new stone flooring consisted of Purbeck Jurassic Blend, with contrasting elements in Purbeck Capstone and Purbeck Grub. It was laid on hydraulic lime with 3mm lime joints, all of which were precisely cut by a water jet machine.
This bespoke design warranted Lovell Stone to specially design the packaging to ensure the safe transportation of the fragile flooring components.
The project was recognised at the Stone Federation Natural Stone Awards 2014 and awarded a Highly commended.
The judging panel thought the end result was magnificent. The interior of this Abbey is built with very precise stonework, and in this context a new floor, with very accurate machine cutting, looks highly appropriate. The choice of Purbeck stone looks com- pletely correct, as does the honed finish.
